In 1859, American Protestant missions started sending medical missionaries to Japan to spread Christianity through medical care. Whereas only male medical missionaries were active in the 1860s–70s, female medical missionaries became engaged in medical work in the 1880s–90s. Historians have argued that these female physicians failed to influence the Japanese since other missionaries disapproved of their medical work and the country already had many native physicians. This paper reexamines their activity by looking at all female medical missionaries who came to Japan during this period. Some worked in mission schools as school doctors, while others opened dispensaries with the support of Japanese doctors or assistants.
具体的には、アメリカン・ボードのバックリー(Sara C. Buckley)とホルブルック(Mary A. Holbrook)、長老教会カミングス(Sarah K Cummings)とライト(Efne A. Light)、メソジスト監督教会のハミスファー(Florence N. Hamisfar)、婦人一致外国伝道協会のケルシー(Adaline D. H. Kelsey)、カンバーランド長老教会のゴールト(Mary A. Gault)、ディサイプルス派のスチーブンス(Nina A. Stevens)を取り上げた。
